[ARCHIVED] Water Meter Replacement Program

LCMUA implemented a Water Meter Replacement Program in the fall of 2015 and, with the help of hired contractors, we are nearing the finish line to close out the program early next year.  Once the program is completed, we will have replaced just over 5,000 meters throughout our operating area.

As with most mechanical devices, meters become less accurate with age.  Manufacturers’ warranties show that accuracy decreases in most meters after 10 years.  The average age of LCMUA’s meters is about 20 years so the LCMUA Board of Directors, along with the executive team, agreed that it was time to make the change.

Water meter technology is continually progressing and the most advanced meters on the market today not only provide accurate readings, but numerous other benefits as well.  Aside from the obvious savings from reduced need for onsite meter reading, the ability to identify not just the volume of water consumption but also the timing of that consumption has significant benefits, particularly to customers.

Smart meters communicate wirelessly over a one-way cellular data network and provide web-based analytics for our customers to see their individual water usage as often as every 15 minutes.  This data results in identifiable water use patterns.  For example, toilets are a quick couple gallons of water usage, whereas dishwashers and clothes washers spread water usage over a much longer timeframe.  By knowing the timing and volume of water usage, customers can identify inefficiencies and/or leaks.

Those residents who have not yet had their meter changed, be patient and we will get to your home soon.  An LCMUA field operator or one of the hired contractors will attempt to contact you at your home on the day when your meter will be replaced.  Meter replacement requires water service to your home to be turned off for approximately 5-10 minutes.  Please let us know if you have any health-related requirements regarding water service to your property and we will do our best to accommodate.  Once the meter is replaced, a flyer with instructions for your new Eye-On Water log-in information will be handed to you or placed on your door.

If you have any questions related to the Water Meter Replacement Program, please call us at 940-497-2999 or email utilitybilling@lcmua.org.
